If you are using Plex, but you are not the owner of a server, the option to download a file is missing from the Plex web interface. This bookmarklet lets you download original files regardless if you are the server owner or not. It's like Direct Play, but with a save button.

This initial version of the bookmarklet has been tested in and works with recent versions of Firefox, Safari and Chrome. It does not work in Internet Explorer at the moment. Edge and Opera browsers have not been tested yet.

Due to recent Plex Server Updates, Different Buttons will work for different Plex Server Versions. You will have to try each until one works. The one on top should work for most servers but just in case, the other buttons are below.

How to install

  1. Drag this button to your bookmarks bar: 💾 PlexDwnld-7 =>> Most current version which includes the Original File Name by default. - Updated January 2nd, 2023

How to use

  1. Step 1: As a pre-requisite, you need to either have Google Chrome or Firefox installed on your computer.(Other browsers may work but have not been tested)

  2. Step 2: Open Chrome or Firefox and make sure your bookmark toolbar is visible. If its already visible then you can skip this step. If you are on a Windows computer hold down the "CTRL" key on your keyboard, then hold down "Shift" key, and while you continue holding down both of those buttons together just press the "B" key. You will see the bookmarks toolbar appear right underneath the address bar. CTRL + Shift + B  :   | If this doesn't work for you view step 10.
  3. Step 3: Under "How to install" shown above, drag the first blue box up into the bookmark toolbar. If for some reason the first button doesnt end up working for you, try the second one by repeating this process.

  4. Step 4: Login to Plex website from the web browser(Chrome or Firefox). https://app.plex.tv
  5. Step 5: Find the Movie, TV Show Episode, or video you want to download and click on it to view the information about the movie or episode or video.
  6. Step 6: Once you see information about the video such as in the images below, you are then ready to click on the Plex Download button that we added to the bookmark toolbar. (I have drawn a red box around what you should see on the pages. If you see that you are on the correct page.)

  7. Movies Will Look like this:

TV Shows/Episodes will look like this:

  8. Click on the PlexDwnld Button on the Toolbar and you will be redirected to download the video.
  9. The Movie or TV Show will begin to download. Then Go back and choose another Movie or TV Show to Download by simply click on the PlexDwnld button again.
  10. Credit to PipLongRun for creating the script.
  11. If you are unable to get the Bookmark Toolbar to show up using the above method, try doing this. Click on the button with 3 horizontal bars/dots in the top right corner. After clicking this, the 4th or 5th option to choose will be "Bookmarks". Select that. Then the third option down it will say "Show Bookmarks Bar/Toolbar". Select that. If it instead says "Hide Bookmarks Toolbar" then that means your bookmarks toolbar is already visible and this step can be skipped.
